A band of light, persistent rain is expected to settle over the garden from Friday evening through Monday morning, forecasters said, bringing the kind of weather that residents spend most of the summer waiting for.

“It’s not dramatic rain,” said one longtime observer of the sky, speaking from beneath a hosta leaf. “It’s the good kind. The kind that stays.”

Local officials urged residents to take advantage of the conditions but to stay clear of the driveway, where foot traffic is expected to be heavy over the weekend.

Paths near the compost heap are expected to be especially crowded on Saturday afternoon.
